Here at Hardy Smiles Pediatric Dentistry, your child’s oral health is our highest priority. Dr. Troy Hardy, our pediatric dentist, is committed to providing your child with thorough, age-appropriate dental care. We encourage parents to take an active role in their child’s oral health by promoting healthy oral habits at home.

Excellent oral hygiene can protect your child’s mouth and help their teeth stay healthy and strong. Teeth are vulnerable to oral disease as soon as they erupt, which means they require daily care. When brushing your child’s teeth, please select a soft toothbrush with a small head. If your child is a toddler, you can use a smear of toothpaste (pea-sized for children ages 2 and up). Fluoridated toothpaste is usually an excellent choice, but you can ask Dr. Troy Hardy which toothpaste is best for your child. Brush in gentle circles, taking extra care with hard-to-reach areas. If your child has two or more adjacent teeth, take a piece of gentle floss and move it gently up and down each side of the teeth. Ideally, your child’s teeth should be brushed and flossed after each meal, but morning and night may be sufficient.

Your child’s diet can have a big impact on their oral health. Limiting sugary foods will reduce the risk of cavities. Instead, provide your child with small, healthy snacks—such as cheese and fresh fruits and vegetables—and nutritious meals. Only give your child water at night, as milk or sugary drinks can cause tooth decay if they are left on the surface of the teeth all night.
