You and Dr. Troy Hardy both know that your child deserves to have an amazing smile. We also know that this does not come naturally. Thankfully, you can help your child grow into the smile they deserve every day. And all of us at Hardy Smiles Pediatric Dentistry are here to support you. That’s why we’ve created a short guide to helping your child keep their smile strong and healthy.

First of all, encourage your children in their oral hygiene routine. Just like adults, children need to brush their teeth twice a day and floss once. If they’re too young for that, you can do it for them. You should know that children don’t actually need toothpaste until age 3. Until then, you can just use a baby or toddler toothbrush and water. You can make it a great experience for them by staying positive and even singing or turning on music while you brush.

Second, teach your children about teeth-healthy foods, such as dairy products and products that have high water content, like carrots and apples. Limit their sugar consumption as it tends to cause cavities.

Finally, your child’s permanent molars may come in at around age six. Consider protecting these teeth with dental sealants. Sealants can provide the molars with an extra layer of protection against bacteria and plaque. This is especially useful because oftentimes molars are more difficult to clean.
